It’s commonly believed that you should put ice on a burn. According to science, it’s important to immediately immerse a burn in cool (not cold) water or apply a cool, wet compress for about ten minutes, suggests the American Academy of Dermatology. But don’t use ice, which can cause more skin damage. It can cause constriction of blood vessels, which makes the burn deeper. After cooling the burn area, wash with soap and water, apply petroleum jelly, and cover with a nonstick, sterile bandage.
