The Century-Long Search for the Loch* Ness Monster

For almost a hundred years, people around the world have been fascinated by the mystery of the Loch Ness Monster, often called “Nessie”. The story began in 1933, when a local couple reported seeing a large creature moving through the dark waters of Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. Since then, hundreds of alleged sightings have been recorded.

In the 1930s, the legend grew after a photograph published in a newspaper appeared to show a long-necked animal rising from the water. Decades later, the picture was revealed to be a hoax — a small model made with a toy submarine. Still, the myth continued to capture people’s imagination.

Over the years, scientists and researchers have tried to find evidence of the monster’s existence. In the 1960s and 1970s, several expeditions used sonar equipment to scan the depths of the loch, detecting some unexplained movements. More recently, drones and underwater cameras have been used to search for signs of life beneath the surface.

In 2019, a team from New Zealand analyzed the DNA present in the water and found no trace of any giant reptile or mysterious creature. However, they did find large amounts of eel* DNA, suggesting that the famous monster could actually be a giant eel.

Despite the lack of proof, many visitors continue to travel to Scotland hoping to catch a glimpse of Nessie. Whether it is a scientific mystery or just a legend, the Loch Ness Monster remains one of the world’s most famous and enduring myths.

How is Dune so prescient about climate change?

The planet, or what’s left of it, is barely recognizable. Once verdant, it’s now a parched wasteland. The rich shelter in air-conditioned bubbles, leaving everyone else to face the storms and sand.

This vision of climate apocalypse is all too familiar today, but in 1963, when Frank Herbert started serializing his science-fiction epic Dune, it was deeply strange. Mr. Herbert’s tale of climate change no longer seems odd. It is in many ways the story of our time.

How did Mr. Herbert foresee our predicament? The environmentalism of Dune had a source close to home. Native communities had suffered some of the worst environmental harms in the midcentury United States, and Mr. Herbert had close contacts among the Quileute and Hoh peoples of the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. Indigenous environmentalists alerted him to how much damage industrialism had wrought. They warned him that it could become planetary in scope, a warning that he passed on in his influential novel.

Four years ago, when my daughter was born, my partner, a Mexican, and me, a Slovenian, decided we would teach her to embrace both cultures with the same respect and enthusiasm. We decided that she would speak both languages equally fluently and that she would consider herself Mexican as much as Slovenian. Considering that we’re living in Mexico, I’m the one who has to assume more efforts to achieve that. This is how I motivate my daughter to embrace Slovenian culture. When my daughter was born, I promised myself that I would teach her Slovene, so I decided to talk with her only in that language. I never use Spanish with her, not even when my partner or other people are around. I regularly switch from Spanish to Slovene, depending on the person I talk to, and it has been working (almost) perfectly. I admit her bilingualism isn’t as good as I would like it to, as she regularly responds to me in Spanish; however, she does understand every single word I say, and as the years go by she’s showing more and more interest in the language.
