Rio 2016 will bring a taste of Brazil to host city

From food fairs to flashmobs, the best of Brazil’s varied culture will be on display during Rios 2016. While sport will take centre stage, the rest of the city will be buzzing with music, art and street performances as well as a few surprises.

The cultural programme, known as Celebra and organised by Rio 2016, complements the line-up put on by Rio’s City Hall to ensure there will be something for everyone during the Games. After its success earlier this year, there will be a food fair outside the Deodoro event zone, where visitors can try typical dishes from around Brazil including the Amazonian soup tacacá and Bahian shrimp and bean patties known as acarajé.

There are plans for flashmobs and street art while Japanese artist Mariko Mori will inaugurate her sculpture of a ring at the head of a waterfall outside of Rio. “We want to show the longevity of Brazilian culture and not just the contemporaneity,” says Carla Camurati, Rio 2016’s head of culture. “The programme involves a comprehensive record of Brazilian culture, not just those that exist today but a broader tribute to Brazilian culture.”

Ms Camurati said there would be small, spontaneous activities along with larger events like the launch of the official Rio 2016 posters. The posters, which were designed by 13 artists, were on display at the Museum of Tomorrow in the regenerated port region before being moved to Deodoro Park. “When you talk about Brazilian culture, it’s so mixed, it’s so interesting that it’s really good to have Brazil represented in Rio, not just Rio’s culture,” Ms Camurati adds.

The party in downtown Rio will begin on 3 August with a live screening of Brazil’s opening football match against South Africa as the Olympic Torch Relay arrives in the area with a surprise show. And while the focus will be in the port region, there will also be a range of sports tournaments for children in the Olympic Boulevard live sites in Parque Madureira and Campo Grande. “They will be like big summer camps,” said Antonio Pedro, Rio’s tourism secretary.

Meanwhile, visitors will be able to pick up a Cultural Passport for just R$15 to enjoy free or discounted entry to 700 events put on by the City Hall. The programme began in May and will continue through September with events taking place all over the city, including joint performances by some of the city’s famous samba schools and Carnival bands. “One of the bonuses of the Olympics, as well as the sports themselves, is the possibility that we have to show our country and our city to the world,” Eduardo Paes, mayor of Rio de Janeiro, says.

“And Rio de Janeiro has two main assets, which are its natural beauty and the strength of his people through cultural expressions. This passport is a great opportunity to show this diversity of Brazilian culture not only for those who visit us, but also for many locals who often end up not visiting cultural attractions. We want people to experience the city at its maximum.”

Gostaria de ter palavras boas, eficientes, para explicar como é isso de não ter saudades; fazer sentir que estou exprimindo um sentimento real, a humilde, a nua verdade. Você insinua a suspeita de que talvez seja isso uma atitude.(...) An estimated three billion people will watch the ceremony which has taken five years to produce and includes 300 dancers, 5,000 volunteers and 12,000 costumes. Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen and Briton Dame Judi Dench are confirmed to have roles in theproduction before the 207 competing teams take part in the Parade of Nations.

There will be 10,500 athletes from a record 207 teams competing in Rio, including the Refugee Olympic Team, while it will be the first time Kosovo and South Sudan have taken part in the Games. The Refugee Olympic Team will compete under the Olympic flag and has 10 members - five from South Sudan, two from Syria, two from DR Congo and one from Ethiopia. With 554 athletes, the United States has the largest Olympic team, but 100m runner Etimoni Timuani is the only athlete from the South Pacific nation of Tuvalu. The Rio Games will be the first to feature Olympians born since the year 2000 - and the youngest is 13-year-old Nepalese swimmer Gaurika Singh.

Brazil is in a deep recession and political crisis, while protests marred the arrival of the Olympic torch in Rio on Wednesday. A New Zealand jiu-jitsu athlete claims he was kidnapped in Rio, while Chinese state media criticised security after women fencers were robbed and shooting team members found "unauthorised payments" on their credit cards. Brazil has drafted in 85,000 security personnel from 55 countries who will be stationed at the sport venues, Olympic Village, airports and main roads - almost twice as many as were at the 2012 London Olympics. There is also 200km of security fencing being used. More than 500,000 tourists are expected to come to the Games and organisers say more than one million of the 7.5 million tickets remain unsold. There have also been issues with the Olympic Village and the sailing venue. Australia initially refused to move into the village in the Barra da Tijuca neighbourhood, citing electrical problems, gas and water leaks among other issues in their building. When they did eventually move in, the team were evacuated for a small fire and returned to their rooms to find essential equipment had been stolen. At the sailing venue in Guanabara Bay, a taskforce removed 25.4 tonnes of floating rubbish during last year's Olympic test event. But Rio officials admit they have failed to keep up promises to clean the water and the Associated Press says swallowing just three teaspoons of water from the bay is likely to lead to illness. This is not the first time a host city has been criticised for its preparations, but the IOC says Rio is now "ready to welcome the world".
