Are cats nocturnal? Unlike bats, for example, cats are not technically nocturnal. Instead, ‘cats are crepuscular,’ explains Michelle Lugones, a veterinarian at Best Friends Animal Society. ‘This means that they are wired to be most active at dusk and dawn.’
‘Many people think that cats are nocturnal because most people who have a cat will attest to the fact that their cat wakes them up in the middle of the night regularly,’ Dr. Lugones says. ‘But that overnight activity usually correlates to their crepuscular tendencies.’
Even though they’re not actually nocturnal, cats certainly do a lot of snoozing during the day. But while they sleep 12 and 15 hours a day, they’re not lazy, or even very deep sleepers! Cats are always ‘on the alert’ – even in their sleep. This means that if there’s a loud sound, they may wake up and instantly be bright and alert. It’s a protective mechanism designed to keep wild animals safe from predators and able to catch prey if the opportunity arises.

What is it that we hear when we hear nothing at all?
In a study, researchers used sonic illusions to show that people perceive silences much as they hear sounds. The results suggest that people perceive silence as its own type of “sound,” not as a gap between noises.
Rui Zhe Goh and other researchers from Johns Hopkins University tested people recruited online with a series of sound illusions. One test compared a single longer sound with two shorter sounds. The two shorter sounds together added up to the same amount of time as the longer sound. But when people listened to them, they perceived the single sound as lasting longer.
To apply that illusion to silence, Mr. Goh and colleagues inverted the test. The scientists used sounds of restaurants, busy marketplaces, trains or playgrounds, and inserted chunks of silence for participants to compare.
In every case they tested, listeners perceived the illusion of a period of silence being longer just as they would have perceived an illusion of a longer sound.

Drawing is one of the most ancient forms of visual art. The medium of drawing is part of us all. It’s our first means of expression and creativity, says Julia Balchin, principal of the Royal Drawing School, London: “As a child, before you can even talk, or walk or read, you can draw. So it’s often our first way of expressing ourselves”.
Drawing has always been vital to every artist’s practice, dating from the Renaissance – when drawing flourished, and Leonardo da Vinci created detailed anatomical studies of the human body – to today.
Though drawing’s popularity has decreased over the centuries, Balchin identifies a deep decrease in the 1970s, when the academic art world saw it as “very unfashionable”.
Drawing is enjoying popularity again – appreciated for its therapeutic qualities and the sense of “flow” it generates, especially since the lockdowns during the pandemic.
The number of students doubled in 2020 from 1,000 students a week to 3,000 today. “I think that showed there was a real longing for human touch and contact,” says Balchin. “If people couldn’t be around other humans, they were drawing them instead.” Students confirmed it helped mental wellbeing.
