Killing two birds with one stone

Enunciado 4648897-1

This post will cover some common ways of talking about doing things successfully. Informally, it is very common to say that we “get something done”. When something is completed successfully and often more easily than you expected, you might exclaim, “Job done!” More formally, we can say we “achieve” or “accomplish” something, especially when it takes a lot of effort. In informal English, when people achieved something extremely well, we can say they “smashed it”. If someone succeeded easily in something difficult, such as an exam, the person “sailed through” it.

Finally, if you are lucky enough to achieve two things with the same action, you could use the expression “kill two birds with one stone”. I hope this post has fulfilled its aim and that you have managed to learn some new words to help you sail through your exams!

For decades, the dry season in the Amazon rainforest has been getting drier. A new study found that about 75 percent of the decrease in rainfall is directly related to deforestation. The study, in Nature Communications, also found that tree mortality was partly responsible for increased heat across the Amazon. Since 1985, the hottest days in the Amazon have warmed by about 2 degrees Celsius. About 16 percent of that increase, the researchers found, was because of deforestation.

The Amazon rainforest is often called the lungs of the planet because its trees help to regulate the global climate by absorbing planet-warming carbon dioxide. But decades of forest destruction have recently changed that script, and parts of the region have become producers of greenhouse gases.

Leia o texto sobre a palavra “lemonading” para responder a questão.

lemonading: a way of confronting problems or challenges in life that involves remaining positive and optimistic.

When life gives you lemons, what do you do? According to a new study, ‘lemonading’ can help you feel better. Originating from positive psychology, the concept of lemonading is all about creatively approaching obstacles as opportunities for growth. It’s not about brushing things under the carpet or faking a smile in the way you might expect from toxic positivity, but rather, about going after the possibility of satisfying experiences among the challenges you face.
